(A New) Day 1 is Done

Well, it could have been worse. I didn’t fast and I ate some carbs but I waited until I was hungry to eat and I didn’t overeat. It’s a (slow) start but it’s a start. I drank a lot of water and did a bit of exercise.  Tomorrow I will ramp it up more. Baby steps..

Weight and Measurements.. scary!

I bought a measuring tape a few weeks ago and have been meaning to do this as often weight loss is seen in inches before pounds.I measured myself so they may not be completely accurate but I will do them again myself every month or so.  Okay, here we go. Oh wait, first I must share my weight. I weighed myself first thing this morning and the scale read:

164 pounds (!!)  This is my heaviest in my entire life.

Bust:  37″
Waist:  30″ (at thinnest part)
Stomach 30″ (at fattest part)
Right arm:  11.5″
Left arm:  11.5″
Hips: 47.5″ (!!!!!!!!!!)

So starting today I am cutting way back on grains, sugar and alcohol and starting to exercise and drink more water. I am also starting 5:2. Fasting on Mondays and Thursdays is the current plan. I am officially disgusted with myself :-/ but ready to reverse the aging process and find my former attractive self. 🙂

Well Hello There!

Gosh, it has been awhile. Things have been crazy. Really crazy. Work has been awful and as a result I have eaten everything in sight. I have been too afraid to step on a scale but my pants are tight. REALLY tight. It’s terrible. They are so uncomfortable and I really am unhappy with things but luckily Lent is upon us and I have decided to utilize it to help me get more focused. It’s working! I have given up sugar and alcohol which means I am drinking more water and I am not snacking nearly as much! I haven’t been fasting much but I did fast on Ash Wednesday and, weirdly, I enjoy it. I like how it attunes my body to my hunger signals and when I finally do eat I enjoy healthy foods immensely.

In my next post I will share my measurements and weight (and maybe pictures) so we can see if there is any progress during these 40 days! Ack.

Ever Tried Intermittent Fasting?

I have tried so many diets and exercise plans and read so many books and have felt so deprived. I’m not joking! On my bookshelf right now I have about 15 books about eating better and getting healthy but I think I have the solution: intermittent fasting! The book I have chosen to follow is 5:2, basically you fast two days of the week and eat normally the other 5. On your fasting days you can eat up to 500 calories but I find that skipping breakfast and lunch altogether and saving it up for dinner works best in terms of hunger pangs. It is supposed to be great for weight loss, extending life, lowering glucose, cholesterol, improving triglycerides, energy level, etc. and the best part: it’s not that hard because you know the next day you can eat! I’m in love.

Always Some Excuse

So breakfast was juice and lunch was a smoothie. But the weather was cold and I was heating up lunch for my daughter.. and I broke down. I ate some cauliflower with cheddar and butter and some black-eyed peas with carrots that had been prepared using smoked turkey and chicken stock. Did I eat any grains? No. Anything processed? Not really. Anything with refined sugar? No. But I had animal products and beans which I said I wouldn’t have. Was I asleep by ten? Yes. Did I wake up early and do yoga? Yes. I am proud of what I accomplished but annoyed with myself for not sticking to my plan, especially as I look in the mirror and see my checks are still covered with hives or this rash or whatever this is.

It is winter. We got a ton of snow yesterday. I want warm food. In the movie Joe fasted when it was warm weather. So did the other guy they highlighted, Phil. I’m pretty sure it was warm when Daniel and Jesus  and Gandhi and other religious figures fasted. Who solely drinks cold juices when it’s 20 degrees outside? I’m sure people do it but gosh darn it if it doesn’t make it more difficult. Though, then again, some folks fast without any food or drink and do it when it’s 100 degrees outside. It’s done. It’s not comfortable. It’s not supposed to be easy or fun or comfortable. I think this really illuminates what kind of person I am. I want what I want when I want it. I gave in. I indulged myself. I didn’t persevere. I gave up.

I gave up.

It got too hard.

It wasn’t fair.

I did the yoga, I got some sleep. I avoided grains and sugar… so I justified eating the food. I did part of it.

But I didn’t do exactly what I set out to do.

Why not? Why was I okay with doing just a half-assed job? Or rather (because I was not okay with it) why did I give up? My skin/energy level/health are suffering! Isn’t that enough?

What is my deal?

I have no idea. This is interesting though. Depressing. Enlightening. Maddening. Infuriating! Sad.

On to Day 2. Or rather Day 1 again. Wish me luck.

Fruits and Veggies Baby!

My mind keeps going back to what I saw in Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. That movie was amazing. If you are having challenges with your weight or your health, I recommend you watch it if you haven’t. It was inspiring. It reminded me of a time when I ate only fruits and veggies for three days once. A friend of mine did this with me and we speak of it often. Day 1 we were motivated. Day 2 we were hungry. Day 3 we were bored with the choices but we felt amazing. Seriously really, really amazing. I remember that feeling as if it were yesterday. I want that again. Thing is, I did that when I was about 25 and in much better health. I imagine it will take me much longer than 3 days to feel great (I bet a month is more likely) but I go back to work in a five days so however long I can sustain it-great. For now I just want to give my body a rest and help clear out some the toxins.

In the movie Joe drank a green juice every day. I am going to start my day with a juice. This was his recipe:

1 bunch of kale
some ginger
1/2 lemon
4 stalks of celery
2 granny smith apples
1 cucumber

I am also a fan of Kimberly Snyder and she starts each day with a green juice as well. Here’s her recipe:

1 bunch of kale

4 stalks of celery

1 small apple

1/2 lemon

Very similar!

Kimberly Snyder also recommends drinking her Glowing Green Smoothies as a morning option. Here’s that recipe:

1.5 cups of water
1/2 bunch of spinach
4 stalks of celery
1 apple
1 pear
1 banana
1/2 lemon

Today is day 1. I started the day with 7 hours of sleep (10:30-5:30) and did some yoga for hips when I woke up. I am looking forward to a simple day of fruits and veggies.

Have you ever done a fast? What did you eat? How long were you able to sustain it? What were your results?
